Is Online Therapy Right for You? 5 Key Questions to Ask Before You Start

Thinking About Online Therapy? 5 Key Considerations Before You Begin

Online therapy has made mental health support more accessible than ever. Whether you’re at home in your favourite cozy corner or on a lunch break at work, virtual counselling offers the flexibility to fit into your life. But before diving in, it’s worth asking: Is online therapy the right fit for me?

If you’re exploring how to start therapy online, here are a few thoughtful questions to consider.

1. Do I Have a Private, Comfortable Space?

Online therapy works best when you have somewhere you feel safe to speak openly—whether that’s a closed-door room, your parked car, or a tucked-away nook with headphones.

Ask yourself:

  • Can I speak freely without being overheard?

  • Can I limit distractions (like kids, pets, or notifications)?

Creating a sense of privacy helps therapy feel like a pause in your day—a moment that’s just for you.

2. Am I Comfortable With Technology?

Most virtual therapy sessions take place on secure video platforms like Google Meet, Jane, Owl Practice, or Zoom. You’ll need:

  • A stable internet connection

  • A phone, tablet, or computer with camera and mic

  • Basic comfort clicking links or opening emails

If you’re not especially tech-savvy, that’s okay—many therapists (myself included) offer support to help you get set up, or even offer phone sessions if video isn’t ideal.

3. What Kind of Support Am I Looking For?

Online therapy can be helpful for concerns like anxiety, burnout, low mood, self-esteem, relationship stress, or life transitions. That said, some situations may be better supported in person, such as:

  • Crisis or safety concerns

  • Complex needs requiring multiple services

  • Therapy for young children

Not sure? A free consultation is a good place to ask questions and explore what kind of support would feel most helpful.

4. Does Online Connection Feel Natural to Me?

Some people find video sessions easier than in-person therapy—they appreciate the comfort of their own space and feel more relaxed. Others might miss the energy of being in the same room as someone.

You might want to reflect on:

  • Do I tend to feel connected over video or phone?

  • Is screen time draining or manageable for me?

  • Can I focus well in virtual settings?

There’s no right answer—just what feels right for you.

5. Am I in Ontario? (Yes, It Matters!)

Even though sessions happen online, therapists still need to be registered in the province where you are located. So if you live in Ontario, your therapist must be licensed here—even if they’re based elsewhere in Canada.

When looking for online therapy in Ontario, always make sure your therapist is registered with a regulatory college (like the Ontario College of Social Workers or College of Psychologists of Ontario).

Gentle Encouragement

Online therapy can be a meaningful and effective way to care for your mental health—especially when life feels full, uncertain, or just a little too much. If you’re curious but not quite sure, that’s completely normal. A no-pressure consultation call is a great first step to ask questions and see if it feels like a good fit.
